Allegheny Western Lines

HO Modular Group

Welcome to the Allegheny Western Lines
The AWL gang at a recent meeting. Planning new modules and setups.
This modular group is the brainchild of Doug Baer, Val Pistilli and Chris O’Brien. In the late 1990’s, we were looking for a way to promote model railroading, allow for individual creativity, operate, and possibly show off various modeling skills to the public. A modular railroad was the perfect way to accomplish all four goals.

We chose to modify the NMRA modular standards from recommendations from our good friends at St. Alban’s Railroad (StARR). We beefed up the bus wires to a heavier gauge to better facilitate the use of DCC. We use Digitrax DCC exclusively. Our group’s specialty is flowing trackwork that is designed to operate! Our scenic elements are beginning to take shape, and they show great potential as well!

The Allegheny Western Lines is a fictional creation of the original three member’s proto-freelanced railroads: Doug’s Erie Southern, Val’s Penn Northern, and Chris’ South Penn. Much like the Chessie System, the three railroads found that the best way to survive was together under one banner. Since then, we have grown to nearly 10 members and have nearly 40 modules, with more on the way!

AWL is little more than 5 years old – we are proud of the strides we have made in that time. Come, take a tour of our site to see what we are about and how we do it. We are always interested in having new members – please contact me for more information (vanionwcu@comcast.net).

Welcome, and happy railroading!

Chris O’Brien, ATC
Chairman
